While making a great movie is tough, making a great sequel seems to be almost impossible. Here is my list of the 5 greatest sequels. Only a couple of rules apply: must be the second movie in a series and must be a strong continuation from the first.
Honorable Mention: Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, Spider-Man 2, Batman Returns, Another 48 Hours, Shrek 2, Toy Story 2, Aliens, Evil Dead 2, Rocky 2, Bourne Supremacy, Die Hard 2, Ghostbusters 2. All of these are good but not great, not top 5.
5)X2: X-Men United
4)The Road Warrior
3)Terminator 2: Judgement Day
2)Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
1)The Godfather II

1 and 2 are great picks, we can argue about placement but definitely they are both there. Terminator 2 is also a great pick, as is your list of honorable mentions. However, Mad Max 2 and X2? Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Back to the Future Part II, and Kill Bill Vol. 2 are all better than either X2 or The Road warrior. I'm sure it was just an oversight because there is now way you intentionally left Back to the Future Part 2 off your list.

You are right. I should have mentioned Temple of Doom, Kill Bill Vol.2 and Back to the Future in the Honorable Mention but not top five. I love Indiana Jones but Temple of Doom fails in comparison to Raiders and Lost Ark. I don't really count Kill Bill Vol. 2 cuz Kill Bill 1&2 is one big movie that they split to get more box office revenue and DVD sales. Back to the Future 2 is great and could be considered for 5b. It's great but not as good as B2F 1. Road Warrior is a classic. It launched Mel Gibson, is a great plot and maybe the greatest post-apocolyptic movie of all time. The Mad Max trilogy is the most underrated trilogy. And X2 is great. They took a great comic and made a stellar movie out of it, which we know is tough. Great story and great character, especially Nightcrawler. You know you love Mystique:)
